MADISON — Reading through Gov. Tony Evers’s massive 2019-21 budget proposal is like turning over a rock; you can’t imagine what you’re going to find next in it.

That’s how state Sen. Duey Stroebel (R-Saukville) describes Evers’ $83.5 billion biennial budget plan, loaded down with billions of dollars in new spending and giveaways to the Democrat’s liberal special interest allies.

The Legislature’s Joint Finance Committee should start with actual spending, not the base, to begin the process of rebuilding Evers’ budget, Stroebel said, in order to do what voters send politicians to Madison to do — identify priorities while protecting taxpayers and encouraging economic growth.

“You have to have constraints, you have to have control. And right now, I’m just not seeing a governor that has really put out a serious budget or has taken a serious approach to what we’re trying to do in this state,” Stroebel said.

Stroebel said the budget does address some of his concerns about Tax Increment Financing, although TIF reform makes up a tiny slice of the massive document.

The Senator discusses the budget in detail, and confesses he’s not familiar with turn-of-the-21st century boy bands in this edition of MacIver Newsmakers.
