Wisconsin Democrats Call for Gun Control
Democratic leaders in and around Madison are leaning toward gun control talking points following the shooting at the Abundant Life Christian School.
Madison Police on Monday said an underage gunman entered the school just before 11 a.m. and opened fire.
As of 1 p.m., police said three people were dead and several others had been wounded. Initially there were five reported deaths, but police later revised that number down.
Madison Police did not immediately share any information about the shooter’s age or race, but police say the shooter was a student at the school.
Leaders in Madison issued a number of statements mourning the dead, and focusing on guns.
“Today, our community is reeling from the heartbreaking and senseless tragedy at Abundant Life Christian School in Madison. My heart goes out to the victims, their families, the students, educators, and everyone affected by this unimaginable and unacceptable violence," Dane County Executive Melissa Agard said in a statement. “No community should ever have to endure such a tragedy. My administration will do everything in its power to provide assistance in the face of this devastating loss. To all those grieving, please know that you are not alone.”
State Rep. Lisa Subek, D-Madison, said much the same thing in her statement.
“Parents should be able to send their kids to school and know that they will be safe,” she said. “Today, our community grieves for the lives lost in this heartbreaking tragedy. My thoughts are with the victims and their families.”
Wisconsin State Superintendent of Schools Jill Underly also leaned toward gun control talking points in her statement.
“ No community should ever face the pain of losing children, teachers, or friends to violence – especially in our schools. Our schools are meant to be safe places,” Underly said. “This tragedy is a stark reminder that we must do more to protect our children and our educators to ensure that such horrors never happen again. We will not rest until we find solutions that make our schools safe, and so our children feel secure. We owe it to every student, parent, and teacher to turn this great sense of grief that we are experiencing into action and build a future where senseless acts of violence are no longer a reality. The time for change is long past. Together, we will stand strong and demand the safety our children deserve.”
Madison Congressman Mark Pocan on Monday blamed Congress for the shooting at the school.
“Another school shooting. This time in my district. 5 dead. 5 injured. From what we know now. Shooter a juvenile who shot themselves. More inaction by Congress. ????,” Pocan wrote on Twitter.
Madison’s police chief says his officers did not fire their guns, and it appears that the shooter took his own life.
