UW's Athletic Director Leaving for Big 10
The University of Wisconsin is losing another big name.
Reports broke over the weekend that Athletic Director Chris McIntosh is resigning to accept a new job with the Big Ten Conference.
UW fans and university insiders say his decision is stunning.
McIntosh was the driving force behind Wisconsin’s new Name, Image, and Likeness law that guarantees the university $15 million in state funds to offset the cost of paying UW athletes.
McIntosh testified before the legislature and said the state money is the only way the university could compete in the new era of college football. Gov. Evers signed that law last week.
McIntosh is just the latest big name at the university to leave or be fired. Last week, UW Regents fired UW President Jay Rothman, and UW-Madison Chancellor Jennifer Mnookin resigned back in February. Mnookin left to become the new president at Columbia.
McIntosh has been athletic director since 2021, but he worked in the AD’s office since 2017.
Among his decisions was the push to fire former football coach Paul Chryst, and the hiring of current UW coach Luke Fickell. Fickell’s job was in question last year, but McIntosh voiced his full support for Fickell despite a 4-8 football record.
The reports say McIntosh is going to a new job with the Big Ten Conference where he will be a deputy conference commissioner.
The UW had not yet said how or when it plans to replace McIntosh.
