Kaul Signs On to Lawsuit Continuing Immigrant Benefits
Attorney General Josh Kaul is part of the lawsuit that looks to allow immigrants in the US to continue to receive welfare benefits.
AG Josh Kaul added Wisconsin to the lawsuit against the Trump Administration on Monday.
“Like so much of the Trump administration’s approach to immigration, this rule would foster fear and uncertainty rather than a more coherent, consistent system,” Kaul said in a statement. “The Trump administration should be stopped from moving forward with this reinterpretation of the public charge provision.”
The Trump Administration’s rule that would bar immigrants in the country, including those with green cards, from using public benefits is supposed to go into effect on Friday. The White House says it doesn’t want people to come to this country and to become “dependent” on the government.
Green Bay-area Republican Congressman Tony Wied echoed that sentiment on Monday.
“The idea that we need to let people into this country just so they can live off taxpayer-funded welfare is insane,” Wied wrote on X. “Democrats would rather see foreigners benefit from your hard-earned money than you.”
Kaul, and 20 other AGs across the country, argued that without public benefits for illegals, schools, hospitals, and communities across the country will suffer.
"When people lose access to health coverage, they delay care and turn to emergency rooms instead, straining hospitals and community health centers, and raising costs for everyone. Schools risk losing automatic certification for free and reduced-price meal programs when SNAP and Medicaid enrollment drops below required thresholds, cutting off meals for eligible students regardless of income or immigration status," the AGs argued.
New York's attorney general is leading the case. Kaul simply signed Wisconsin onto the case.
