One Day There Will be a Republican Governor
There is a warning about the Wisconsin Supreme Court’s recent moves to reshuffle the balance of power at the Capitol in Madison.
Wisconsin Institute for Law and Liberty founder Rick Esenberg said the liberal majority on the court will regret handing the governor so much power.
“We’ve fundamentally changed the balance of power in our government, and not for the better,” Esenberg told News Talk 1130 WISN’s Jay Weber Wednesday.
Esenberg said the Wisconsin court’s decision to allow state agencies to craft rules, and then enforce those rules without legislative oversight leaves the state with an “unconstitutional system.”
“This was a decision yesterday that was in favor of kings,” Esenberg explained. “Justice Rebecca Bradley pointed out it seems that our friends on the left don't like kings, unless they're kings of their own making.”
The liberal-majority court has ruled against Republican lawmakers a couple of times this year. In addition to the recent JCRAR decision, the high court also backed Gov. Evers’ 400-year veto, and overturned a 2018 law that required the attorney general to get legislative permission before settling any lawsuits.
Esenberg said the court’s rulings “will backfire,” because one day there will be a Republican in the governor’s mansion again, and that governor will have the same powers that the liberals on the court are giving to Gov. Evers.
Esenberg also said the liberal-majority court is showing its hypocrisy by ruling in favor of the very same thing that Wisconsin liberals are trying to fight in Washington, D.C.
“Our friends on the Left are all concerned about executive overreach on the federal level, yet they're quite fine with it on the state level,” Esenberg said. Esenberg added that he thinks we should be censored about executive overreach at every level of government.
