WILL Warns Schools Could Lose Funding
The Wisconsin Institute of Law and Liberty says schools in the state could lose hundreds of millions of dollars if the state’s superintendent continues to thumb her nose at the Trump Administration.
WILL warned that if State Superintendent Jill Underly did not sign-off on President Trump’s anti-DEI-in-school verification by the end of the day Friday, the president will likely punish the state by withholding federal funding.
“This is really straightforward,” WILL’s Cory Brewer said on News Talk 1130 WISN. “It prohibits racial discrimination in schools. You can't use race as a stereotype. You may not treat anyone differently because of their race. And I think the posturing that we're seeing by DPI here, I really do think it's political. And it's putting this money at risk.”
President Trump’s Education Secretary in February ordered an end to all DEI programs, and required schools to sign-off that they have done so.
Underly sent a letter back to the Education Secretary, and vowed not to comply.
A pair of federal judges on Thursday placed a hold on the anti-DEI order, ruling that parts of it were vague.
Still, Brewer said Superintendent Underly is taking a political stand that will likely cost both school kids and taxpayers.
“This isn’t a hypothetical risk. It's a real risk,” Brewer added. “And if Wisconsin loses this funding, they're going to have to make up for it. And the taxpayers could see that impact.”
Brewer said that could mean local property tax increases, more school referendum questions, or another veto from Gov. Tony Evers to try and replace lost federal dollars with more state dollars.
