WILL Backs Questions 1 & 3
Two of Wisconsin’s proposed constitutional amendments are getting a big boost ahead of Election Day.
The Wisconsin Institute for Law and Liberty on Wednesday announced a six-figure ad buy to support the proposed amendments to ban DEI in Wisconsin governments, and the amendment that would stop future governors from issuing another 400-year tax increase.
"No governor should be able to use a veto pen to create or increase taxes or fees that the Legislature never approved. Question 1 would put that basic taxpayer protection into the Constitution and restore an important check on executive power," WILL's Kyle Koenen said in a statement.
Question 1 asks whether the "the constitution be amended to prohibit the governor, in exercising his or her partial veto authority, from creating or increasing or authorizing the creation or increase of any tax or fee?”
Konen said voters should say Yes.
"Wisconsin gives its governor one of the broadest partial-veto powers in the country, but that power should have limits," he added.
WILL is also backing Question 3, which asks "Shall section 27 of article I of the constitution be created to prohibit governmental entities in the state from discriminating against, or granting preferential treatment to, any individual or group on the basis of race, sex, color, ethnicity, or national origin in public employment, public education, public contracting, or public administration?”
“Government should treat every Wisconsinite equally, WILL's Dan Lennington said. "The Equality Amendment would establish a clear constitutional rule that state and local governments cannot discriminate or grant preferential treatment based on race, sex, ethnicity or national origin.”
WILL is not taking a position on Question 2, which would stop any Wisconsin governor from closing churches during a new or another pandemic. That question came from Gov. Evers' order to keep people from church during COVID.
All three questions will be on the November ballot.
