Van Orden on Voting Against Iran WPR
Western Wisconsin’s congressman is explaining his vote against the war powers resolution on Capitol Hill.
Congressman Derrick Van Orden, who is a former Navy SEAL, said he voted against the resolution on Wednesday because it sets a dangerous precedent.
“Is Congress now going to set the rules of engagement for the military overseas?” Van Orden asked during an interview on News Talk 1130 WISN.
All of Wisconsin’s other Republican congressmen also voted against the resolution. The state’s two Democrats in Congress voted for it.
As did four Republicans on Capitol Hill. Van Orden questioned why they did.
“It’s absolutely absurd. It hamstrings the executive branch. Congress is not designed to run policy, we have oversight on policy,” Van Orden added. “We had four Republicans who were absolutely bamboozled by every single Democrat."
Madison’s congressman, Democrat Mark Pocan, voted for the resolution and called it a win for the American people.
“The American people are tired of presidents abusing their power by spending billions of our taxpayer dollars on unnecessary wars,” Pocan wrote on X. “I urge the Senate to quickly pass this bill to end Trump’s illegal war in Iran.”
The vote does not end the war and the resolution still needs to pass in the Senate. Van Orden said the president has been following the original War Powers Resolution to “the letter of the law.”
President Trump on Thursday said there could be an agreement to end the war soon. Perhaps, he said, as early as this weekend.
