AG Candidate Eric Toney on Kaul's Crime Lab Backlog
Wisconsin’s race for attorney general is focusing on the state’s crime lab in its closing weeks.
Republican challenger Eric Toney is out with a new ad, featuring several Wisconsin sheriffs, that hammers Democrat Attorney General Josh Kaul. "Josh Kaul promised to fix [the crime lab's backlog] instead, average DNA testing times are up 60%," Waukesha County Sheriff Eric Severson said in the ad.
"Even with more resources and better technology, Kaul is still taking twice as long to complete many tests," Adams County Sheriff Brent York added.
"Then Kaul changed the reporting, delayed the release of the [crime lab] numbers and hid his failure from public view," Kenosha County Sheriff Dave Zoerner said.
Toney said his focus on the state's crime lab, and his promise to improve it, is the reason why nearly 80% of sheriffs in the state support his bid for AG.
"I was endorsed by over 75% of the sheriffs in Wisconsin––including Democrats, Republicans, & Independents. They have my back because I’ll put public safety over politics and bring common-sense leadership back to the DOJ," Toney wrote on X.
Toney is using the crime lab as his closing pitch to voters in the race for Attorney General.
The race, however, has not gotten much attention this election season. That was reflected in September's Marquette Law School Poll.
"Attorney General Josh Kaul, the Democratic candidate, is seen favorably by 22% and unfavorably by 18%, with 59% who haven’t heard enough," pollster wrote. "Fond du Lac District Attorney Eric Toney, the Republican candidate, is viewed favorably by 11% and unfavorably by 12%, with 76% not having heard enough."
Kaul has also run a silent campaign.
He has only posted on X three times this month, and all of those posts were about last week's one and only candidate debate in the race for AG.
