Kaul & Toney on UpFront
It wasn’t much of a debate between the two candidates running for attorney general in Wisconsin, but that’s not much of a change.
Fond du Lac County DA Eric Toney and Democrat Attorney General Josh Kaul met for their only debate over the weekend on UpFront.
It was more of an interview than a debate, but it continued the under-the-radar campaign that Kaul has been running for re-election.
But the debate showed clear differences between the two.
Toney focused on what he called Kaul’s failings at the state crime lab.
"He actually got more DNA analysts in 2019 in that budget from the Republican Legislature, and he said that he thought he had enough DNA analysts to do the job," Toney said. "And then what we saw a year later when a nonpartisan audit came out of our crime labs, the attorney general hadn't even filled the new positions that he received."
Kaul blamed the Republican-led legislature for any crime lab shortcomings.
"What's not acceptable to me is that the Legislature, and specifically Eric Toney's political allies in the Legislature, have continued to deny the resources we've requested," Kaul added.
But Kaul also shifted the race, away from the needs of Wisconsin law enforcement, and to President Trump.
"One of the things I think is critical is that our attorney general is protecting the people of Wisconsin," Kaul said. "There are people across our state who are hurting right now because of actions that the Trump administration have taken."
Kaul has spent most of the past four years suing the Trump Administration. He has signed-on to dozens of lawsuits from other Democrat attorneys general to fight the president on everything from SNAP reforms, to election information, to a suit filed last week over federal grants.
This is a rematch for Toney and Kaul. They ran against each other in 2022, and Kaul won by about one point or about 35,000 votes.
