Tiffany to Prioritize Affordability & Reliability
Republican candidate for governor Tom Tiffany has been clear that he wants to end Gov. Tony Evers’ 400-year tax increase, and wants to return the state’s $3 billion surplus to taxpayers. Now he’s clarifying his plans for utility bills in the state.
Tiffany said in a Wednesday interview on News Talk 1130 WISN that, if elected, he would change the focus at Wisconsin’s Public Service Commission.
“I will only have Public Service Commission members that emphasize affordability and reliability. Those are the only two questions that need to be answered,” Tiffany said.
Tiffany said governors in Wisconsin have a lot of power to decide the price of electricity, and said Gov. Tony Evers used that power to make power bills across the state more expensive.
“We’ve seen [Gov. Evers’] commissioners be a rubber-stamp for these utility rate increases. Over $2 billion worth of rate increases over the past eight years,” Tiffany added. “It is part of what is nickel-and-diming people here in Wisconsin.”
Gov. Evers’ Public Service Commission has approved $2.2 billion in rate hikes since he was first elected. Many of those allowed utility companies to pass the costs of building new green energy projects on to customers.
Tiffany said, while he’s not opposed to wind or solar projects, he wants to prioritize costs and performance.
“We’re going to end this nonsense of converting our farmland to wind and solar that has driven-up the cost of electricity,“ Tiffany explained. “Let’s keep our baseload sources of power, and it’s time to embrace the new nuclear technologies.”
Wisconsin has the highest energy prices in the Midwest, and some of the highest in the country. The average power bill in Wisconsin is about $125 per-month, up from just a few years ago. The average power bill for businesses and commercial customers is closer to $740 a-month.
