Tiffany Comments on Requested Rate Hikes
The Republican candidate for governor is taking-on Wisconsin’s current governor over spiking power bills.
Republican Tom Tiffany on Thursday took to X to explain how Gov. Tony Evers’ appointed regulators have allowed utilities in Wisconsin to add billions of dollars to power bills across the state.
"Who’s been running the Wisconsin Public Service Commission in recent years? Democrats," Tiffany wrote in a post. "Under their watch, more than $2 billion in utility rate hikes have been rubber-stamped."
We Energies this week asked the state’s Public Service Commission for a 14% rate hike over the next two years.
We Energies said the hikes would add as much as $13 more per-month next year, and an extra $8 or $9 per-month the year after that.
Madison’s Democratic Congressman, Mark Pocan, however blamed Tiffany and President Trump for increases in power bills.
"Your vote in the big ugly law made our rates go up," Pocan wrote on an X post of his own. "Two words. Glass houses. Another three words. You broke it."
But Tiffany pointed out that the average We Energies bill has doubled over the past 20-years “We Energies wants to raise your electric rates another 14%. This comes after the Democrat-appointed PSC under @GovEvers approved over $2 billion in rate hikes in the last five years, a whopping 71% of what utilities requested," Tiffany added. "I will appoint PSC commissioners who say NO to unreasonable rate hikes, and I will say NO to any data center that tries to raise your utility bill."
A We Energies spokesman said the company needs the 14% rate hike to continue to deliver reliable electricity across the state.
