Wisconsin: "Data Center Hub"
Republican Tom Tiffany is turning his focus to data centers, and trying to paint his opponent as a data center flunkie.
Tiffany on Monday released a new ad that hammers Democrat candidate for governor David Crowley over his unmitigated support for data centers.
"@DavidCCrowley wants Wisconsin to become a data center hub for the 'entire globe.'," Tiffany wrote on X. "That’s not my vision."
The ad plays Crowley's comments from last year where he said "there's an opportunity for us to really become an AI and data center hub...not only for the entire country, but for the entire globe."
The ad also claims that Crowley won't rollback data center tax incentives.
Tiffany said he is not opposed to all data centers, but wants clear guidelines and protections for Wisconsinites.
“There should be no new data centers without strong standards to protect Wisconsin. If we pave over productive farmland and drive up demand on our electric grid, families will pay the price through higher food and utility costs,” Tiffany added in a statement.
Crowley didn't address Tiffany's new ad, but on Friday released his own statement on data centers.
"I want to be very clear," Crowley said in a video posted on X. "Local communities should be the end all, be all when it comes down to data centers. They should be able to make the decisions when it comes down to data centers. And if they don't want a data center, they should not be forced to have a data center."
Data centers have become one of the major issues in Wisconsin's race for governor. And the polls show that most people in the state are not sold on data centers.
Marquette Law School's February poll showed a "majority of voters statewide, 70%, say the costs of large data centers are greater than the benefits they provide, while 29% say the benefits outweigh the costs."
