Tiffany Focuses on State Government Audits, Accountability

Tiffany is making an issue of state government accountability after years of less than flattering audits over Gov. Tony Evers’ administration.

"My plan is to audit all of state government...."

Tom Tiffany is asking questions about why Democrats in the state are not more interested in making sure government is open, accountable, and actually working.

Tiffany took to X over the weekend to press the issue.

"Why did Democrats in Madison veto four state auditor positions? Because they don’t want accountability for where your tax dollars are going," Tiffany wrote. "My plan is to audit all of state government, increase transparency on where your money goes, and return the $3 billion surplus to you."

Among those audits are reports on broadband spending that showed a lack of oversight, and an audit on how the governor spent or mis-spent COVID relief money.

Tiffany on Friday launched his Taxpayer Accountability Plan.

“Wisconsin taxpayers work hard for every dollar they earn. Government should work just as hard to earn their trust,” Tiffany said. “State government needs to prove it is using the money it already has responsibly. As governor, we are going to bring more transparency, better results, and less waste to state government.”

Tiffany is promising, if elected, to:

  • Audit state government to identify waste, fraud, and duplication. Tiffany also committed to adding more auditors after Governor Evers vetoed the creation of four new state auditor positions this past budget cycle.
  • Modernize OpenBook Wisconsin to make it easier for taxpayers to search and understand state spending.
  • Create public agency dashboards showing taxpayers where their money is going, what services agencies are providing, and the results taxpayers are receiving.

"We’re going to find the waste. We’re going to eliminate duplication. And we’re going to demand results for every dollar taxpayers send to Madison,” Tiffany said. “Government should be accountable for every dollar it takes from taxpayers.”
