The top Republican in the Wisconsin Senate says the governor has ignored lawmakers for weeks and is running out of time to be a part of the state budget.
Senate Majority Leader Devin LeMahieu on Thursday told reporters that he is still waiting to meet with the governor, in-person, to talk about budget priorities.
“So, the governor and his staff have had our plan, that we worked out with the Assembly to provide meaningful tax relief to hard-working families, since March. March,” LeMahieu explained. “We've asked for specific items he would need to see in his budget to agree to cutting taxes. His staff has not been able to provide any of those details over the last six or seven weeks.”
LeMahieu added that he and Assembly Speaker Robin Vos have offered several days this week, and into next week when the three of them could meet face-to-face.
LeMahieu said he “sincerely” hopes the governor agrees to sit down with Republican leaders.
“It's imperative that we meet by the end of next week, at the latest, to stay on schedule to pass a budget by the end of the fiscal year. It's as simple as that,” LeMahieu said. “Time is ticking. The fiscal year is coming to an end, and if we're going to work through, finance, and get a budget passed we need to meet with the governor next week.”
Evers has not yet said when or if he plans to meet with Republican leaders, but he has made it a feature of six-plus-years as governor to not meet with the top Republicans at the Capitol.
LeMahieu and Vos have said they want to pass a tax cut package, and see what the governor does with it, before agreeing on a full state budget.
Evers has said he wants any tax cut package to be part of the budget.
