Wanggaard and Andraca Argue Over Gun Control
Two Wisconsin lawmakers are taking their disagreement over gun control and Wednesday’s shooting in Minneapolis public.
Sen. Van Wanggaard, R-Racine, and Rep. Deb Andraca, D-Whitefish Bay, went back-and-forth on X over laws that Wisconsin Democrats say would prevent a mass shooting in this state.
“Hold your thoughts. Prayers are not enough. We don’t have to live this way. If your elected officials won’t support common sense gun laws VOTE THEM OUT,” Andraca first wrote on X.
Wanggaard responded with a list of "'common sense gun laws' Minnesota has that didn't prevent this tragedy,"
“Universal background checks, Red Flag/ERPO, Secure Storage, Bump Stock Ban, Auto-switches, K-12 gun free, Open carry regulation, Ability to deny purchase, Waiting period,” Wanggaard wrote in response.
Andraca quickly followed-up with a post on Thursday.
"The Senator and I have discussed this, as former law enforcement he knows better. Speed limits don’t eliminate reckless driving and we don’t say 'oh well! Drive fast!'" Andraca wrote. "He CAN give these bills a public hearing, and vote them down if that’s what he believes will keep people safe."
Wanggaard then responded to Andraca’s response.
"We HAVE discussed this. And you & I both know none of these laws would have prevented yesterday’s tragedy. Because like when we discussed four years ago, it didn't prevent the tragedy in that state, either," Wanggaard added. "And I do know better than to politicize a tragedy. You apparently don't."
Wanggaard and Andraca’s debate on X came not just after the shooting at the Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis, but a pair of Democrats in Wisconsin introduced legislation that would ban concealed carry on UW campuses.
