Scott Krug Demands Answers Regarding Milwaukee Mess-up
There’s another call for formal answers about how Milwaukee’s election office messed-up on Election Day.
State Rep. Scott Krug, R-Rome, said during a weekend appearance on UpFront that lawmakers will hold a hearing into Milwaukee’s Election Commission if commission leaders can’t explain how a poll worker downloaded vote audits five times during this month’s primary, as opposed to the actual vote totals.
"The point is, I want to know that we're ready for November. So if it takes more training, more input from stakeholders to say okay this is how we can do things better, that's great. But I still need to see some accountability and less incompetence," Krug said.
Krug's comments come after Rep. Dave Maxey, R-New Berlin, sent a letter to Milwaukee's election boss demanding to know what happened, and how Milwaukee's election office will make sure it doesn't happen again.
“What exactly happened on the night of August 11? Please provide a step-by-step, timestamped account of the error, from the decision to leave the facility to the discovery that five tabulators had not been exported," Maxey wrote. “Please provide a full list, including the 2020 and 2024 incidents, with a description of what corrective action was taken after each one and why those corrective actions failed to prevent this one.“
Krug said he wants specifics as well.
"Who, what, where, when, why and how and what's going to be better?" Krug said. "If they're not going to be more forthcoming directly with us, then yes, we should have a hearing."
Milwaukee's election commission chairwoman, Paulina Gutierrez, again blamed human error.
"I, too, am frustrated and disappointed by the process, but with every step that we take, we get better. And the training was there, and at no point was the accuracy of the results threatened. It was just about when those results were posted," Gutierrez said on UpFront.
