Choice Schools in Milwaukee Outperform Public Counterparts
The latest school choice snapshot in Wisconsin once again shows success.
School Choice Wisconsin on Thursday released a comparison of scores from the Forward Exam for elementary school kids, the preACT, and the ACT. And the scores show that choice students do better than similar students in public schools.
“These results stand to reinforce a recent School Choice Wisconsin report showing that private choice schools are significantly more productive than public schools,” School Choice Wisconsin VP of Operations Carol Shires said in a statement.
The comparison looks at kids in the Milwaukee Parental Choice Program vs. Milwaukee Public Schools, kids in the Racine Parental Choice Program vs. Racine Unified Schools, and kids in the Wisconsin Parental Choice Program and economically disadvantaged public students across the state.
"On every comparison, choice students in the Milwaukee Parental Choice Program and Racine Parental Choice Program outscored public students in Milwaukee Public Schools and the Racine Unified School District," School Choice Wisconsin said. "Statewide, low-income choice students in the Wisconsin Parental Choice Program significantly outperformed economically disadvantaged public students in all comparisons."
The difference is, in many cases, staggering.
While Milwaukee choice students scored just 3% better in reading on the Forward Exam in the third grade, that gap was almost 10.5% in the 8th grade.
In Math, Milwaukee choice students did 12.7% better than their MPS counterparts in eighth grade.
In Racine the eighth grade gap was 8.7% in reading and 12.5% in Math in favor of choice students.
The biggest gaps, however, came for choice students statewide. Compared to other low income kids, choice students were 24% better at reading in the eighth grade than public schoolers, and 13.9% better at math.
School Choice Wisconsin’s other numbers show even larger gaps on the preACT and ACT exams, with choice students scoring higher across the board.
