Roys Touts WEAC Endorsement: “Most Moral Authority” In State

One of the Democrats running for governor in Wisconsin says she now has the moral support to win the race.

Candidate Kelda Roys Endorsed by WEAC

One of the Democrats running for governor in Wisconsin says she now has the moral support to win the race.

Madison Democratic state Senator Kelda Roys last week picked-up the endorsement from WEAC, Wisconsin’s largest teachers’ union.

"I earned [the endorsement] because of my policy positions, because of my plans for public education and because I think they recognized that this election is in some ways existential for our public schools," Roys said during a weekend appearance on UpFront.

WEAC was one one of the biggest spenders in the last race for governor in Wisconsin. Records show the union spent $500,000 in the race to get Tony Evers re-elected. Much of that money went to A Better Wisconsin Together, an outside group that spent $800,000 in the 2022 race.

In addition to the money, the WEAC endorsement comes with the promise of support from thousands of school teachers across the state.

"It's the most important endorsement that's going to happen in this Democratic primary. They have the most reach. They have the most resources. They have the moral authority representing 70,000 educators and public school support professionals across the state of Wisconsin,” Roys added.

Roy said she didn’t make any promises to land the endorsement, but she said she’s long been a supporter of Wisconsin’s public schools.

Roys needs all the help she can get. The last Marquette Law School Poll had her getting just 1% of the Democratic primary vote. On UpFront, she said that’s because most voters are simply not paying attention right now.

Voters won’t go to the polls in the primary til August. Right now, there are seven Democrats running for governor this year.
