Hospital Refuses to Treat Police Officer for Having his Duty-issued Firearm
Republicans at the Wisconsin Capitol say they appreciate the apology from Froedtert Hospital after someone there denied treatment to a Milwaukee police officer because the officer had his gun.
“Honestly, what the hell,” Rep. Bob Donovan, R-Greenfield, wrote on Twitter. “Cops protect us everyday and yet when they need help, this is the result. We are looking into what exactly is happening at Froedtert--it has to come to an end. Unbelievable.”
“To this officer involved and our law enforcement community, we apologize for this incident,” South Region president for Froedtert ThedaCare Health, DR. Bryce Gartland said in a letter. “In addition to protecting the interests of our community, you also protect our patients and the thousands of team members who work alongside you to provide care for our communities. We are grateful for your everyday acts of bravery and selflessness.”
That wasn’t enough for 25 Republican lawmakers, who wrote a letter of their own.
“This latest incident appears to be part of a pattern of behavior on the part of Froedtert,” noted Sen. Julian Bradley, R-New Berlin, wrote in the letter. “It cannot be allowed to continue. They need to reverse any policies that discriminate against our police."
The letter also calls Froedtert's decision as “indefensible” and “dangerous,” warning that it undermines public safety and reflects a troubling pattern of hostility toward law enforcement.
“The presence of police officers makes places safer, not more dangerous,” said Sen. Van Wanggaard, R-Racine, added. “Froedtert’s alleged treatment of armed police officers legitimizes the false narrative and just-plain-wrong anti-police rhetoric that police are reckless vigilantes looking to hurt people.”
“An apology was necessary, but frankly that is just the beginning. There seems to be a history of attempting to impede officers from doing their job,” Donovan added on Twitter Thursday. “To make matters worse, Froedtert seems to be the only institution doing this. Why is that?”
