Evers, O'Connor Both Take Credit for Surplus
Republicans at the Wisconsin Capitol are once again unhappy that the governor is taking credit for their fiscal success.
Rep. Jerry O’Connor, R-Fond du Lac, on Thursday said Gov. Tony Evers took a victory lap this week following the latest report that showed Wisconsin ended its fiscal year with over $4.6 billion in the bank.
“The $4.6 billion surplus is a result of strong fiscal responsibility by Legislative Republicans over the past decade,” O’Connor said.
Evers framed it differently in a press release.
“Over the past six years, we’ve been hard at work to provide real, responsible tax relief for middle-class folks and families, while still paying down our state’s debts and saving where we can—and it’s clear our hard work is paying off,” the governor said. “I look forward to continuing to work across the aisle to be good stewards of taxpayer dollars while making smart and strategic investments to protect the future that we’ve worked hard to build together.”
“It is thanks to numerous legislatures, past and present, that Wisconsin remains fiscally sound,” O’Connor shot back.
The new $4.6 billion surplus is $265 million more than originally expected. And is in addition to a nearly $2 billion rainy day fund.
“Contrary to how the governor has misleadingly framed this report, this is not new money. Nor is it a result of his fiscal planning,” O'Connor said. “If our tax-and-spend governor had enacted his proposed budgets, we would have a scarily different report and fiscally dire situation to discuss. [The surplus] is thanks to numerous legislatures, past and present, that Wisconsin remains fiscally sound.”
