Steil & Collins Visit Janesville VFW
Today, representative Bryan Steil and Veterans Affairs Secretary Doug Collins fielded questions from Janesville veterans and military family members.
The hour-long roundtable discussed policy issues facing the VA and the Trump administration's efforts to improve the quality of care received by veterans.
In particular, Secretary Collins emphasized the serious backlog of claims that carried over from the previous administration, and how the VA has been able to reduce the number of outstanding claims to less than 100,000 for the first time since 2020, a 43% reduction since the Biden administration.
The Secretary also noted that this was accomplished, in large part, because of the reduction of thousands of redundant VA employees, and the streamlining of the claims filing process.
Veterans in the audience shared their experiences and frustrations with the current VA system, and offered solutions as to how the claims and benefits process could be improved for veterans seeking healthcare.
The Secretary stated he was cognizant of other problems yet to be resolved by the Department, but was hopeful that additional funding for the VA proposed in the current budget draft would provide the VA with the resources necessary to attract enough competent healthcare workers so that veterans can receive the care they're entitled to.
