Mark Born on the Prison Agreement with Governor Evers
One of the Republican leaders at the Wisconsin Capitol says Gov. Evers is over-selling the bipartisan agreement on prisons in the state.
Rep. Mark Born, R-Beaver Dam, who is one of two chairmen of the Joint Finance Committee on Thursday released a column that spells-out where Republicans agree with the governor, and where they don’t on Evers’ planned prison overhaul.
"Republicans agree that Green Bay Correctional Institution (GBCI) is outdated and must be replaced, but what we will not support is another blank check to an administration that has failed to deliver transparent, detailed plans for how to move forward," Born wrote.
The governor on Wednesday announced a bipartisan agreement to close the prison in Green Bay, and to renovate several of Wisconsin’s others. Evers also is moving forward with his plan to transition Wisconsin’s prison system to more of a rehabilitation model, and to shrink the number of people behind bars.
Born is clear that Republicans are not on-board with that.
“When it comes to reforming Wisconsin’s correctional system, there is one principle that must remain at the forefront and that is public safety. Every decision we make, from planning new facilities to closing outdated ones, must be grounded in data, accountability, and transparency,” Born added.
Born said Republican lawmakers have three “expectations” before any prison plans can begin or end. Those include:
“What we’ve seen from the Evers administration so far is more political theater than real planning. Their so-called ‘comprehensive corrections plan’ lacks the details, the data, and the discipline necessary to move forward,” Born wrote.
