Evers is Not Seeking Re-election
Tony Evers is not running for a third term as Wisconsin governor. Now, politicos on both sides of the aisle, and across the state are looking to who will be running instead.
Evers made his announcement Thursday morning.
“For five decades, my family has sacrificed to give me the gift of service. They’re my world. And I owe it to them to focus on doing all the things we enjoy and love doing together,” the governor said in his announcement. “It’s why, Wisconsin, I’m announcing that I will not be running for a third term.”
The news immediately touched-off a string of well wishes, thanks, and entries into next year’s race.
Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley said he needs to “talk it over” with his family as to whether he would run.
Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson also said he’d need to think about a possible run.
"I think there's time to figure that out,” Johnson said.
Both Johnson and Crowley are considered likely Democratic candidates.
So are Madison State Senator Kelda Roys and Lt. Gov. Sara Rodriguez.
Rodiriguez sounded like she is very much running in her statement.
“There’s still work to do to make sure every family in Wisconsin has a fair shot at a better life – and I’m ready to roll up my sleeves and get to work," she said.
Roys didn't say anything about a possible run in her Thursday posts to Twitter.
"I want to thank Tony Evers, not just for his two terms as governor but for his lifetime of service as an educator," Roys wrote. "I also want to thank him for something that is in short supply during these chaotic times: his abiding normalcy."
One of Thursday’s most interesting speculations is that former Gov. Scott Walker may be considering a run.
He posted a picture of a MAGA hat with the 45-47 in the center, saying “interesting…”
