Badger Battleground: Crowley Has Edge Over Tiffany

Tom Tiffany is starting the final push for governor in Wisconsin from behind.

A new Badger Battleground Poll shows Democrat David Crowley has a four point lead over Tiffany in the race for governor.

"Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley leads Congressman Tom Tiffany by a narrow 48-44 margin on the Gubernatorial ballot, including a 42-30 lead among independent voters and a 54-35 lead in the Battleground Assembly Districts," pollsters wrote.

Crowley's four-point lead is not surprising or unexpected.

Crowley spent the last two weeks of the Democrat primary blanketing the state with campaign ads, and campaigned from one corner of the state to the other.

Crowley also led Tiffany in the final Marquette Law School Poll just before the August 11th primary.

The Badger Battleground Poll shows that Crowley enjoys a favorability edge as well.

"Crowley holds a favorable-unfavorable margin of 43 percent favorable to 26 percent unfavorable. However, only 20 percent have a “very favorable” opinion of him, versus 19 percent “very unfavorable,” indicating some of his favorability is tied to the current wave of positive media coverage following his primary win," the poll added. "Tiffany registered with 38 percent of participants viewing him favorably and 43 percent viewing him unfavorably. 24 percent have a “very favorable” opinion of him while 37 percent have a “very unfavorable” opinion of him."

Tiffany spent much of his Republican primary airing ads aimed at introducing himself to voters. Politicos in the state expect to see those ads phased out as the campaign gets closer to November.

Democrats in Wisconsin are also entering the November election with an advantage in statehouse races.

"The generic legislative level reflected in part the national environment, with a generic Democrat leading a generic Republican 47-44. Both parties enjoy near-universal support among those who identify with that party," pollsters wrote.

Voters will make their choices for both governor and the legislature on November 3rd.
