Cavalier Johnson: "fight fire with fire"
Add Milwaukee’s mayor to the growing list of Democrats who claim they don’t want to redraw state political maps, but will if they have to.
Mayor Cavalier Johnson on Thursday said he doesn’t like that Texas Republicans are looking to redraw their maps and add five Republican-heavy districts. And he doesn’t want blue states to sit back and take it.
“Democrats have a number of things to do,” Johnson said. “First and foremost is to show we have some backbone. Don’t simply take things lying down.”
Johnson said Democrats too often “turn the other cheek,” and said this time they need to “fight fire with fire.”
Johnson’s comments on redistricting come after Wisconsin Democratic U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin said pretty much the same thing.
“We can’t fight back with one hand tied behind our backs,” Baldwin said.
“I think that some of the Republican rhetoric, led by the President, has put us in this position. So I don’t like where we are. Let me just say that,” Johnson added. “But I think that it is important, some of the efforts that are happening in California and other places, where Democrats are actually fighting back and showing some resistance. That is important. And voters want to see that.”
Johnson didn’t say what he thinks of the move by liberal law forms to redraw Wisconsin’s Congressional map.
Gov. Tony Evers already redrew Wisconsin’s legislative maps, and that led to huge Democratic gains in the Assembly and Senate. There is hope to grab at least two Congressional districts with a remap there.
But the liberal-majority Wisconsin Supreme Court has not yet agreed to hear the latest request to change the maps. No one is saying when, or even if, the high court will take up redistricting.
