Milwaukee's Cavalier Johnson on FBI Investigation

Milwaukee’s mayor is accusing President Trump of trying to go back in time.

Mayor Cavalier Johnson on Thursday said the president is trying to “alter reality” by having the FBI speak with election officials in the state.

"Let me state it clearly — Donald Trump won elections for president in Wisconsin for both 2016 and 2024. He lost the election for president in 2020 in Wisconsin to Joe Biden," Johnson said in a May 14 statement. "Deploying federal law enforcement to alter reality is outrageous."

The mayor’s comments come after reports of an FBI agent who went to speak to Milwaukee County's elections director Michelle Hawley at her home. The report says the agent left a card, but did not speak with Hawley.

Johnson’s comment also comes after Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley said essentially the same thing earlier this week.

“The 2020 Presidential Election was fair and transparent, and its results are accurate. This has been proven repeatedly over the last six years by the post-election canvass, the Presidential Election Recount, State court-based challenge, Federal court-based challenge, the forensic audit by the Wisconsin’s Legislative Audit Bureau, and two additional independent audits,” Crowley said in a statement. “Continuing to relitigate settled questions does not strengthen public confidence in elections but it undermines it.”

The FBI has not said what it may be investigating in Wisconsin. In fact, the FBI has so far refused to comment on the case.

But the Justice Department is looking into the 2020 election in swing states. Investigators seized hundreds of boxes of ballots in Fulton County, Georgia back in January. The FBI also issued a grand jury subpoena in March for election information from Maricopa County, Arizona.

The FBI last week spoke to someone with the Wisconsin Elections Commission, also about the 2020 election.
