Mayor Johnson's Letter to Tom Tiffany
Milwaukee’s mayor is once again pushing back on questions about Wisconsin’s 2020 election.
A week after Mayor Cavalier Johnson called the FBI investigation into Milwaukee County’s election an attempt to “alter reality,” the mayor is now saying questions about that election “open the door for future swindlers to illegitimately seize power.”
“The current FBI examination in Milwaukee is plainly a weaponization of the justice system. There is no basis for the current investigation beyond fantasies and lies advanced by charlatans,” the mayor wrote in a letter Tuesday to Republican candidate for governor Tom Tiffany.
Tiffany told reporters earlier this week that he wants answers about the 2020 election, and wants to see the FBI investigation play-out.
“Whatever they’re searching for, the investigation should be allowed to continue and let’s find out what happened there,” Tiffany said. “If there’s improprieties that happened then there should be charges filed. If not, then you let the investigation cease.”
Johnson said that kind of thinking is problematic.
“Without the slightest justification, your comments misleadingly cast doubt on our election processes. You undermine voters’ faith that any authentic democracy must maintain. You open the door for future swindlers to illegitimately seize power,” Johnson wrote. “Serious leaders debase themselves with falsehoods and innuendo. Pandering to dishonesty is unbecoming of a sitting U.S. Representative.”
The FBI has confirmed it is looking into the 2020 election in Wisconsin. Federal agents have already spoken with an administrator at the Wisconsin Elections Commission. The FBI, however, has not said exactly what it is looking for.
There is also no indication that the city of Milwaukee’s election office is under investigation.
President Joe Biden won Wisconsin’s 2020 election by about 20,000 votes. President Trump won in 2016 and again in 2024 by about the same margin.
