Milwaukee GOP Calls for City Government Overhaul

Milwaukee’s Republican Party boss says it’s time for some opposition in city government.

Milwaukee GOP Chairman Hilario Deleon announced on Twitter just before Christmas that he’s organizing an Accountability Committee to better monitor how Milwaukee’s city government is spending taxpayer money, and whether the city is delivering the city services it is promising.

"Time and time again it seems that the city of Milwaukee continues to drop the ball on almost everything that happens when it comes to delivering services that the Citizens of Milwaukee have to pay for with their tax dollars!" Deleon said. "As Chairman, today I am publicly announcing that as the opposition party in this city, we will be putting together a Milwaukee Accountability Committee.

His announcement came a few days after a handful of Milwaukee alderman started talking about a refund from the city's snowplow fund.

The aldermen were upset by how Milwaukee handled the four inches of snow that the city saw on December 20th.

“If we can’t handle 4 inches of snow now, what’s going to happen later this winter? We’re f***ed!” Alderman Peter Burgelis said in a statement.

Deleon used much tamer language.

"The goal is to research and breakdown the spending the city continues to put towards projects and different government services, and see if they are being utilized properly. We must also ensure that the neighborhoods that feel like they are forgotten have a voice and that their concerns are resolved by the elected officials who are responsible in representing them!" he added.

Deleon said the new Accountability Committee will be citizen-led.

"This committee will serve and work as a team of party members who live in and have previous experience working in or with the City Government," he continued on Twitter. "Government accountability is being brought across the nation, it is long overdue that the @mkegop steps up and work towards creating a new and better Milwaukee."

Deleon is not saying if he has any support from current aldermen, nor is Deleon saying when the committee will first meet.

Burgelis and the other angry aldermen are set to meet about their snowplow refund proposal Wednesday, January 8th.

Deleon’s Milwaukee Accountability Committee comes after Wisconsin Assembly Speaker Robin Vos announced a statewide effort to look for government accountability.

He's calling his committee the Government Operations Accountability and Transparency, or the GOAT.

There's also DOGE, or the Department of Government Efficiency, from Elon Musk that will look for waste, fraud, and abuse at the federal level.
