Republicans' "Dangerous" Immigration Plan
Gov. Tony Evers is not the only Democrat in Wisconsin condemning a plan from Republican lawmakers to work with ICE to deport illegal immigrant criminals.
A handful of Milwaukee County leaders on Monday all signed-on to a statement officially opposing the proposal that was introduced Tuesday at the State Capitol.
“Republicans in the Wisconsin State Legislature have once again introduced a misguided proposal that misdirects the time and resources of County Sheriffs away from their jobs as public safety officers and reduces them to a tool of the Trump administration’s bigoted obsession with scapegoating immigrants,” the group said. “This dangerous legislation would force Wisconsin residents to carry documents at all times to prove they have the right to live in their homes, go to work, and pick their children up from school. Under this proposal, anyone detained by a Wisconsin sheriff who cannot immediately prove their legal status would be at risk of being handed over to federal authorities.”
Milwaukee County Supervisor Jack Eckblad along with Supervisors Caroline Gómez-Tom, Juan Miguel Martínez, Anne O’Connor, Steven Shea, Sky Z. Capriolo, and Justin Bielinski, as well as County Clerk George L. Christenson, County Treasurer David Cullen and Register of Deeds Israel ‘Issy’ Ramón all added their names to the opposition.
“The only thing this proposal accomplishes is to bankrupt Wisconsin law enforcement both morally and fiscally,” the group said in their statement. “As good-faith representatives, we refuse to support any proposal that forces our neighbors, family members, and constituents to carry papers proving their legal status. We urge the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office to remain focused on actual public safety instead of enabling the worst policies of Trump extremists”
Republicans, on Tuesday, said the proposal which essentially fines sheriffs that do not cooperate with ICE is about public safety.
Sen. Julian Bradley, R-New Berlin, said 87% of people in a recent New York Times poll want criminal illegals deported, and 55% of people in the poll want all illegals deported.
“Only far-Left extremists in this country believe that someone here illegally, who commits a felony should be able to stay here,” Bradley said Tuesday.
The Republican immigration legislation is doomed however.
Gov Evers office on Monday promised to veto it if it reaches his desk.
