Supreme Court Race raises more than $12 Million
We are getting another snapshot of just how expensive Wisconsin’s race for the state supreme court is going to be.
Waukesha County Judge Brad Schimel on Monday announced that he raised $2.7 million in January alone.
“I am grateful for the overwhelming support our campaign has received, and this historic haul reflects our momentum across the entire state,” Schimel said in a statement.
The $2.7 million in January brings Schimel’s fundraising total to just over $5 million since he entered the race last year.
But Schimel isn’t the only one raising millions of dollars.
Dane County Judge Susan Crawford also announced her latest fundraising haul on Monday.
Her campaign said they raised $4.4 million in January. In all, the Crawford campaign says they’ve raised $7.3 million since getting into the race last year.
At least $1 million of Crawford’s money has come from the Democratic Party of Wisconsin. Out-of-state donors have also been big contributors to Crawford.
Richard Uihlein and former Republican candidate for governor Tim Michaels are among Schimel’s biggest donors.
Wisconsin’s last race for the high court, back in 2023 saw $50 million in total spending. There are many who expect this year’s race between Schimel and Crawford to be even more expensive.
The fundraising totals certainly look that way.
Back in 2023, conservative candidate Dan Kelly reported raising nearly $314,000 in January of that year. His liberal opponent, Janet Protasiewicz raised just over $925,000 in the same month two years ago.
Neither Schimel or Crawford has said just how much they’ve spent, or how much cash they have left on hand.
Both candidates have launched a series of TV and online ads. Both candidates are also being supported by huge ad buys from outside groups. The race, which will see voters decide in April, is expected to be the biggest race in Wisconsin this year. And it could be the most expensive in the country as well.
