Marquette Poll Shows Broad Support for Republican Issues in Wisconsin

“Requiring a photo ID to vote is favored by 77% and opposed by 22%,” Marquette Law School Poll.

Majority Support for Voter ID

Voters in Wisconsin support many of the top priorities from Wisconsin Republicans, whether they know it or not.

The latest Marquette Law School Poll shows broad, and at sometimes overwhelming, support for lower taxes, less spending, school choice, and voter ID.

The poll, which was released yesterday, shows more than three-quarters of the people asked support voter ID.

“Requiring a photo ID to vote is favored by 77% and opposed by 22%,” pollsters wrote Wednesday. “In a dozen polls since 2012, the lowest support for the photo ID requirement was 63% in a poll conducted Oct. 9-12, 2014. When asked last in August 2021, 74% favored photo ID.”

The MU poll also shows overwhelming support for the proposed constitutional amendment that would require voter ID in the state.

Pollsters say 73% of people support the amendment, while just 27% of people who were asked oppose it.

But that’s not the only Republican priority with broad support.

The poll noted that:

  • More than 60% say Wisconsin schools have set standards lower than they should be, with 34% saying standards are about where they should be and 6% saying standards are too high.
  • 58% say holding down property taxes is more important than increasing funding for K-12 schools, while 41% say it is more important to increase funding for schools.
  • 57% favor allowing all students statewide to use vouchers to attend private or religious schools, with 43% opposed. 74% of Republicans and 54% of independents favor statewide vouchers for all students, while 59% of Democrats are opposed.
  • 54% favor requiring state employees to return to work in their physical offices and 45% oppose a policy of returning to offices.

The only issue where Wisconsin voters strongly take the Democratic position is on abortion.

Pollsters say “64% of WI voters favor legal abortions in all or most cases, with 36% who say it should be illegal in all or most cases.”
