Marquette: Hong & Socialism Popular
The latest Marquette Law School Poll shows that Democrats really like both Francesca Hong and socialism.
The poll, which was released Wednesday, shows Hong with a more than comfortable lead in the Democrat race for governor.
“Hong is the choice of 26% [of voters], followed by former Lt. Gov. Mandela Barnes with 15%. Lt. Gov. Sara Rodriguez, who dropped out of the race after polling was completed, has 11%, with 2% for Joel Brennan and 1% for State Sen. Kelda Roys. Forty-five percent are undecided,” pollsters wrote.
Pollsters said 58% of very liberal voters support Hong, as do 26% of liberal voters. However, just 8% of moderates support Hong.
Hong leads every candidate among very liberal and liberal voters, but only trails Mandela Barnes among moderate voters.
The poll is not perfect because it does not include David Crowley, and does include Sara Rodriguez even though she is no longer running.
Still, it provides a snapshot of not just where the Democrat race is, but also where Democrat voters in Wisconsin are.
Marquette pollsters asked about the favorability of socialism and the Democratic Socialists of America.
The poll shows that 82% of very liberal, and 60% of liberal Democrats have a favorable view of socialism. The poll also notes that 25% of moderate Democrats have a favorable view of socialism.
Pollsters said the support for socialism is a factor in Hong's lead in the race.
"Among Democratic primary voters who are favorable to Democratic socialists, Hong wins 45% of the primary vote, and among those unfavorable to Democratic socialists she receives 8%," the poll added.
But not every voter has such a favorable view of Hong or socialism. Pollsters also noted that just 25% of all voters in Wisconsin have a favorable view of socialism, while 49% have an unfavorable view.
"Among Republicans, 1% have a favorable view (using the combined measure) with 84% unfavorable, and among independents 13% are favorable with 52% unfavorable. Fifteen percent of Republicans say they haven’t heard enough, as do 31% of independents. Among Democrats, 54% have a favorable opinion of Democratic socialists, 10% are unfavorable," the pollsters wrote.
