Senate Would Reconvene with Two More Votes
The Surplus Deal which failed to pass in the senate last month may not be dead.
Senate Majority Leader Devin LeMahieu released a press release just minutes ago, saying, "If two more Senators decide to stand with the 80% of Wisconsinites who support this compromise, the Senate will meet to send the proposal to the governor."
The announcement isn't too surprising given the response from legislative leaders in the aftermath of the bill's failure.
Many on the Republican side of the isle have since blamed Senate Democrats for the bill's failure, who voted unanimously against it.
But the real challenge for Republican leadership will be convincing the three Senate Republicans––Nass, Kapenga, and Hutton––who voted against the Deal.
However, given that Senators Nass and Hutton are both retiring, leadership will likely have to focus on flipping Kapenga's vote and one other Democrat.
Senate Republicans are hoping that the Marquette Law School poll showing 80% support among respondents will be enough to flip two votes and get the bill sent to the governor.
