LeMahieu Suggests Tax Refund
Republicans in the Wisconsin Senate want to give people their money back.
Senate Majority Leader Devin LeMahieu on Wednesday floated a plan to send $1,000 checks to married couples in Wisconsin, and send $500 to people who aren’t married.
“You and your family know how to spend your hard-earned dollars best, not the state government” LeMahieu said in a statement.
The potential rebates would be based on tax returns from 2024.
"Whether you need more room in your budget for groceries, or if Gov. Evers’ 400-year veto sent your property tax bill through the roof, the State Senate intends to vote next week to return the surplus to the people who created it in the first place: you, the taxpayers," LeMahieu added.
LeMahieu’s pitch came the day after Assembly Republicans talked about a potential property tax relief deal with the governor.
That deal reportedly would allow Gov. Evers to send over $600 million more to schools across the state in exchange for just over $1 billion in property tax relief.
Assembly Majority Leader Tyler August, R-Walworth, said Wednesday that there’s no “deal” right now. And he said there won’t be one if Gov. Evers doesn’t agree to end his 400-year veto.
“I'm not certain how serious they actually are about trying to get to a deal when one of the provisions in one of the governor's proposals was to basically codify in statute his 400-year,” August said.
It was that 400-year veto, which guaranteed a 400-year school funding increase, that helped spike property tax bills across Wisconsin this year.
The state currently has a $2.5 billion surplus. Without an agreement on how to spend it, that surplus will roll over into next year.
