Josh Kaul Seeking re-election as Attorney General
Josh Kaul is not running for governor.
Kaul on Tuesday announced he will not join the crowded field of Democrats who are trying to replace Gov. Tony Evers, and will instead run for attorney general for a third time.
“This is a pivotal time for our nation. Some of our most basic rights are under threat. Severe cuts have been made to programs that provide opportunities and have helped communities move forward. It’s critical that we continue to have an AG who will stand up for our freedoms and the rule of law,” Kaul said in a statement.
Kaul had been considered by many as the likely frontrunner in the Democratic race.
Kaul won statewide twice before, in 2018 and 2022, getting more than 1.3 million votes each time. In 2018 Kaul beat former Republican attorney general Brad Schimel by just over 17,000 votes. Four years later Kaul beat Fond du Lac County D.A. Eric Toney by 35,000 votes.
Kaul is one of only two of the half dozen or so declared Democratic candidates who have won statewide before. Lt. Gov. Sara Rodriguez also ran and won statewide, but only once.
Former Lt. Gov. Mandela Barnes, who also ran for U.S. Senate in 2022 on Tuesday said he is interested in jumping into the governor’s race.
“In Wisconsin, we’ve made meaningful progress, and we need to build on that progress. As my track record shows, I’m committed to working to protect public safety and to looking out for the interests of Wisconsinites,” Kaul said.
There is not yet a Republican candidate for A-G in Wisconsin, though there are behind the scenes rumblings that someone will enter the race in the coming days.
