Francesca Hong Leads the Democrat Field

The latest look at Wisconsin’s Democrat race for governor is much like the last few.

Francesca Hong leads the latest Wedgewood Poll sponsored by The Isthmus Political Report, with Mandela Barnes in second, and Sara Rodriguez in a distant third.

"Among likely Democratic primary voters, State Rep. Francesca Hong holds a narrow edge with 30% support, just ahead of former Lt. Gov. Mandela Barnes at 28%. Lt. Gov. Sara Rodriguez trails in third at 19%, with 23% either undecided or backing another candidate," the poll states.

Pollsters say the numbers show the Democrat race is far from settled.

"The Hong-Barnes gap sits well within the margin of error, and the sizable undecided share signals a primary electorate that remains very much in motion," pollsters wrote.

The margin of error for that part of the poll is 4.4 points.

This new poll is the latest where Hong has the lead. The Marquette Law School Poll from May gave her the lead with 14% of the vote. Barnes was second in that poll as well. He had 11% of the vote. And Rodriguez was tied for third with just 3% of the vote.

The poll also looked at who is supporting each candidate.

"Hong runs strongest with voters under 45 and with non-white primary voters, while Barnes draws his best numbers from non-white voters and voters without a four-year degree. Rodriguez performs best among voters 65 and older and among college graduates, but lags badly with voters under 30," pollsters added.

There is also a head-to-head breakdown for Hong, Barnes, and Rodriguez against Republican candidate Tom Tiffany.

The poll shows Barnes beating Tiffany 48-44, Rodriguez beating Tiffany 47-43, and Hong beating Tiffany 47-44.

"All three Democratic candidates run within striking distance of Rep. Tom Tiffany in a general election," poll states.

The margin of error for that piece of the poll was 5.3%.

Voters will decide the Democrat field in next month's primary.
