Green Bay Clerk Mails Duplicate Ballots

Green Bay’s election manager is once again facing questions after mailing two ballots to some voters.

The city clerk’s office said over the weekend that someone mailed duplicate ballots to voters in eight city wards.

“Our voters deserve clear, accurate and reliable election administration—these are the standards the city sets and that I set for my office," City Clerk Celestine Jeffreys said in a statement.

Jeffreys is blaming a "certificate label printing error" for the duplicate mailings.

“I regret the printing error occurred. I assure our voters that only one ballot per eligible voter will be tabulated. I encourage any voter with questions to contact our office directly.”

The clerk said her office mailed about 5,000 ballots for the August primary election, but no one is saying how many duplicate ballots were sent out.

The clerk’s office did say that some voters in wards 11a, 12a, 37a, 44-47 and part of ward 43 received a duplicate ballot. The clerk’s office also promised a letter to those voters this week that will explain how to destroy one of their two ballots.

This is the second straight election where Green Bay’s clerk mailed two ballots to some voters.

Back in April, the clerk blamed a similar mailing label problem for sending 152 duplicate ballots to voters in that election.

Jeffreys said none of the duplicate ballots from April were counted, and said none of this month’s duplicate ballots will be counted either.

Republicans in Wisconsin filed a complaint back in April after the first round of duplicate ballots. It’s not clear if the party is looking to file a second complaint.
