Governor Evers Ignores President-Elect Trump In Election Recap

“To the Wisconsinites worried about what the future may bring, let me be clear: I will always fight to protect our LGBTQ families and kids, especially our trans and nonbinary kids. I will always fight for women, access to affordable healthcare, and reproductive freedom," Gov. Tony Evers.

Wisconsin’s governor simply ignored the new president-elect in his post-Election Day recap.

Gov. Tony Evers on Thursday shared his thoughts on Tuesday’s election. The governor started by thanking the new legislative maps that he drew for giving Democrats more seats in the State Capitol.

“For the first time in over a decade, Wisconsinites cast their ballots and were no longer voting under some of the most undemocratic, gerrymandered legislative maps in America. Republican lawmakers can no longer ignore the will of the people. With a record number of Democratic candidates running for office, we picked up ten seats in the State Assembly and we’re on track to have a Democratic majority in the State Senate after the next election,” Evers wrote. “As a result, this next legislative session, I am hopeful we will finally begin to see a Legislature that is more cooperative, more collaborative, and more responsive to the will of the people of this state.

He also praised Senator Tammy Baldwin for squeaking-by with a narrow win.

“Tammy has always put the people of Wisconsin first, taken on the tough fights, and been a critical partner in moving Wisconsin forward. I could not be more grateful that she’ll continue serving Wisconsin in the U.S. Senate,” he added.

Evers then praised Kamala Harris for the campaign she ran, but he never once mentioned Donald Trump by name.

“This year Wisconsin once again saw one of the closest presidential elections in the nation. Vice President Harris ran a historic campaign that energized people in every corner of our state. Although the outcome wasn’t what we hoped for, I was proud to stand with her and I know she will continue to be an important leader in our party. I believe a peaceful and respectful transfer of power is a cornerstone of our democracy – we should all work to protect this shared value,” the governor explained. “Wisconsin is a purple state. For many Wisconsinites, the presidential election results were a victory, and for nearly as many Wisconsinites, a loss to grieve.”

Evers then said he too will be looking to be part of the Trump-resistance that other Democratic governors have promised to wage for the next four years.

“To the Wisconsinites worried about what the future may bring, let me be clear: I will always fight to protect our LGBTQ families and kids, especially our trans and nonbinary kids. I will always fight for women, access to affordable healthcare, and reproductive freedom. I will always fight to reverse the climate crisis and to leave our kids and grandkids with a more sustainable, better world than the one we inherited. I will always fight to defend democracy and the basic institutions on which our country was built. And I will always—always—fight for our kids and for the better future they deserve,” the governor added. “My promise to the people of Wisconsin has always been to be a governor who works for all Wisconsinites and does the right thing when it matters most. That’s a promise I will continue to keep.”
