FoodShare Funding Runs Out by October's End
Wisconsin’s governor is blaming Republicans on Capitol Hill for what he says is the pending end to food stamps in the state.
Gov. Tony Evers on Tuesday said the state’s food stamp program, officially known as FoodShare, will run out of money at the end of October.
“The Trump Administration has indicated that there is not enough funding to provide another month of food benefits. As FoodShare benefits are 100 percent funded by the federal government, Wisconsin FoodShare members will not resume receiving benefits until after the federal government shutdown ends. This means that if the shutdown continues, at this time, FoodShare members will not get their monthly benefits in November, and even if the shutdown ends tomorrow, for example, November benefits will be delayed,” the governor's office announced.
There are nearly 700,000 people on food stamps in Wisconsin. There are another 59,000 mothers and babies enrolled in WIC in Wisconsin, though funding for WIC will not be interrupted.
Gov. Evers blames Republicans for the federal government shutdown, and for the threat to FoodShare in Wisconsin.
“No person should ever go hungry—most especially not in the United States of America. President Trump and Republicans in Congress must work across the aisle and end this shutdown now so Wisconsinites and Americans across our country have access to basic necessities like food and groceries that they need to survive,” the governor said in a statement.
But Northwoods Republican Congressman Tom Tiffany, who is running for governor to replace Evers, said the governor needs to look to his own party for someone to blame.
“Hey Tony, do you need a civics lesson on the Senate’s 60-vote rule, or are you just trying to mislead Wisconsinites?” Tiffany wrote on X. “Democrats have voted 11 times to shut these programs down. Maybe you should ask Senator Baldwin why she is blocking the bipartisan bill and holding them hostage.”
