Gov. Evers Standing Up for Food Stamps
Wisconsin’s governor is again promising to fight the Trump Administration over any food stamp claw back.
Gov. Tony Evers on Friday released a video on X, defending his decision to spend nearly $114 million on November food stamp benefits during the small gap judge’s order to spend the money, and the supreme court’s pause on that order.
"Here in Wisconsin we followed that court order, and worked quickly to get payments out to 700,000 Wisconsinites who rely on FoodShare, including about 270,000 kids,” Evers said. “Now president Trump wants his money back. He's making a last ditch effort to yank food out of the hands of nearly 700,000 Wisconsinites, and that includes 270,000 hungry kids. It's pathetic, and frankly it's embarrassing. It's shameful to try to take away food from kids, families, and seniors, period. “
The president said last weekend that Wisconsin and other blue states that paid their November food stamp benefits would need to “undo” those full payments, and instead send out partial payments.
Evers did not say in his Friday video whether he received any new communication from the Trump Administration, or if he has a specific plan to fight the “undo” order. Instead, he offered defiance.
“We cannot, and will not, sit around and wait for the Trump Administration to come and take away food from our hungry kids, families, and seniors in the state,” Evers added. “If the Trump Administration continues to try to mess with kids, families, and seniors across our state who need access to basic food and groceries, I promise you this: I will fight against it with every tool and every power we have.”
Wisconsin this week joined a coalition of states that are suing to block the Trump Administration claw back. That case is pending.
