Governor Evers Files Second Lawsuit Against Trump Admin
Wisconsin’s governor is suing President Trump, again.
Gov. Tony Evers on Tuesday announced a lawsuit against the Trump Administration over the president’s newly-ordered cuts to the AmeriCorps.
“These latest reckless Trump and Musk cuts will hurt Wisconsin’s kids who are homeless or who need tutors for math and reading, folks who are working to overcome addiction and substance use, stop work on conservation projects, as well as all of the dedicated public servants whose livelihoods are depending on this work,” the governor said in a statement.
The Trump White House ordered $400 million in cuts to AmeriCorps, which is about 40% of the AmeriCorps budget.
“Once again, the Trump Administration is trying to cut federal funding that Congress already approved and Wisconsin is counting on to help kids, families, and communities across our state—all so they can pay for tax cuts for millionaires and billionaires,” Evers added.
It’s not clear just how much money Wisconsin will lose, but the head of Serve Wisconsin, which administers the AmeriCorps grants in the state, said all 25 programs in Wisconsin are being canceled.
That list includes Teach for America in Milwaukee, some of the University of Wisconsin’s 4-H programs, and the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction’s Farm to School program.
Evers was not the only Democrat to jump on the president’s cuts.
“AmeriCorps has been a shining example of what Americans can accomplish when we work together. Every administration — Democratic and Republican — has recognized the critical role AmeriCorps plays in strengthening our neighborhoods, training young leaders, and restoring our environment,” Rep. Amaad Rivera-Wagner, D-Green Bay, said in a statement of her own.
The AmeriCorp lawsuit is the second from Gov. Evers this week. On Monday he announced a lawsuit over federal money tied to Wisconsin public schools. Evers has also joined suits over President Trump’s moves to deport illegal immigrant criminals, and the president’s order to dismantle the U.S. Department of Education.
