Brittany Kinser on Reading Scores
There is a new way for parents to see how well their kids’ school is doing on the state’s reading tests, but it’s not just informational.
Brittany Kinser, who ran for state superintendent last year, is driving the Kids Win in Wisconsin literacy dashboard.
Launched last week, it’s a place where parents can search for their kids’ elementary or middle school, and get a snapshot of how well that school is teaching reading and writing.
“All you do is type in the name of the school you're interested in, it'll come up, you push the button and quickly you'll see the data,” Kinser explained in an interview on News Talk 1130 WISN Tuesday. “Everyone who has been looking at it has been shocked. They're like ‘Wait, this is where the schools are at in reading?’ They had no idea.”
The latest Wisconsin Forward Exam results show just under half of kids in Wisconsin schools can read and write at grade level. But Kinser said those results aren’t trustworthy because the state superintendent’s office lowered the bar for the tests.
Kinser said the Nation’s Report Card shows that just a third of kids in Wisconsin can read and write at grade level.
But Kinser doesn’t want parents to just read the Kids Win dashboard. She wants them to act on what they find.
“I would ask to meet with your principal, and ask them ‘What are the plans? Here's the data, what are the plans to improve reading instruction and outcomes for kids at our school?’” Kinser added. “I would ask that question, and then I would ask the teacher ‘What can I do? Where's my child at, and what can I do to partner with you to ensure my child is reading at or above grade level?’”
