Evers Marks June as Pride Month, Republicans Celebrate Dairy Month

June started out as National Milk Month in 1937 to promote drinking milk.

Pride Month vs Dairy Month

Wisconsin’s elected leaders generally celebrated June in one of two ways.

Gov. Tony Evers and Democrats used the weekend to mark the beginning of June as Pride Month.

“Happy Pride Month, Wisconsin!” the governor wrote on Twitter. “This month, we celebrate LGBTQ folks across our state and country and commit to the work ahead to make sure every Wisconsinite can live boldly in their truth without fear.”

He was not the only Wisconsin Democrat to declare June as Pride Month.

“It's about love, It's about equality, It's about always being authentically you, Happy pride!” Sen. Chris Larson, D-Milwaukee, wrote on Twitter.

Evers, on Friday, hoisted the progress pride flag above the state capitol.

“When the Pride Flag flies above the People’s House, it sends a clear and unequivocal message that Wisconsin recognizes and celebrates LGBTQ Wisconsinites and Americans,” Evers said in a statement. “Every day, but especially today and this month, we reaffirm our commitment to striving to be a place where every LGBTQ kid, person, and family can be bold in their truth and be safe, treated with dignity and respect, and welcomed without fear of persecution, judgment, or discrimination.”

This is the seventh year that the governor has flown a pride flag above Wisconsin’s statehouse.

Meanwhile, Wisconsin Republicans marked the beginning of June as the start of Dairy Month.

“Today is the first day of June, which can only mean one thing—it’s officially National Dairy Month!” Rep. Amanda Nedweskie, R-Pleasant Prairie said to start the month. “Let’s raise our glasses of milk and celebrate all of the hardworking dairy farmers who make us proud to call Wisconsin the Dairy State!”

June started out as National Milk Month in 1937 to promote drinking milk. Just two years later, in 1939, Wisconsin Dairy farmers changed it to June Dairy Month, and it became the official title.
