Evers Fights for Food Stamps
Wisconsin’s governor is continuing to fight the White House over a possible food stamp clawback.
Gov. Tony Evers on Monday wrote a letter to all of Wisconsin’s members of Congress, demanding that they denounce the Trump Administration over its handling of the SNAP program.
“I write to express the urgent need for you to take action today to call on the USDA to stop trying to take food out of the hands of nearly 700,000 Wisconsinites, including about 270,000 kids, and blocking states’ access to November SNAP funding by refusing to release readily available federal resources to feed kids, families, and seniors that are going hungry now across Wisconsin and our country,” the governor said in his letter.
Evers is upset that the Trump Administration won a pause on the federal judge’s ruling last week that ordered the president to make the full November food stamp payment. After the Supreme Court issued that pause, the president told states like Wisconsin to freeze food stamp benefits, and work to get back what had already been sent out.
Over the weekend, Gov. Evers simply said “No.”
On Monday, Evers doubled down and blamed Republicans in Congress for not standing-up.
“As elected officials, we have an obligation to speak up for and protect and defend the people we serve. I am grateful for U.S. Sen. Tammy Baldwin, Rep. Mark Pocan, and Rep. Gwen Moore, who already are. I find it deeply troubling the rest of you have failed to do so, and I implore you to change that today,” Evers wrote.
“While my administration and other states continue to actively fight in court against the Trump Administration’s efforts to deprive Americans of food assistance, as Governor of the great state of Wisconsin, I plead to each of you, as members of the U.S. Congress, to assist us.”
