"The Concern is Children not Learning How to Read"
The woman running to replace Wisconsin’s state superintendent of schools says she gets one question time and time again, and it’s always a simple one.
“The concern is about children not learning how to read,” Brittany Kinser told News Talk 1130 WISN on Monday. “Parents, and grandparents they're seeing it. They're seeing that their children are struggling. We know that 70% of children need phonics, which we have not been teaching in our schools in over 30 years throughout our country. So people are concerned about their children being prepared for the real world.”
Kinser has made reading the centerpiece of her campaign.
She is promising to restore Wisconsin’s learning standards if elected.
Current State Superintendent Jill Underly lowered those standards last fall. Underly claims the new measurement for reading “better reflects” what Wisconsin school kids are actually learning.
Kinser said the new standards are lower, and don’t show parents much.
“She does not want to be honest. She has not been honest about the results for kids,” Kinser added. “She has lowered the standards to make it look like more children are reading well when they're not. She hid the financial issues in Milwaukee before we went to a referendum. She does not want to discuss the reality of her failed leadership.”
Kinser, earlier this week, accused Underly of ducking candidate forums in the race.
Lawmakers last week said Underly also ducked them when the Department of Public Instruction was called to testify about those lowered standards.
On Tuesday, Underly accused Kinser of being the one to duck questions about the race.
“The Wisconsin Public Education Network will hold a public forum on the future of education in Wisconsin—but Lobbyist Brittany Kinser has declined to attend,” Underly claimed.
Kinser on Wednesday launched her first ad of the season. Voters in Milwaukee and Green Bay will be the first to see it.
