There’s another Democrat running for governor in Wisconsin, and there could be another coming soon.
State Sen. Kelda Roys, D-Madison, jumped into the race Monday.
“With everything on the line, Wisconsin needs a Governor who’s been training for this moment her whole career and knows how to deliver,” Roys said in her campaign launch video. “We can’t afford to wait. No matter who you are or where you’re from, you deserve the freedom to thrive right now: the best public schools for every child, quality, affordable health care for every Wisconsinite, good jobs that don’t just pay the bills but help you build the future you want."
Roys is the third major Democrat to jump into the race. She joins Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley, and Lt. Gov. Sara Rodriguez. Roys ran for governor back in 2018 as well, but she lost in the primary to Tony Evers who went on to serve two terms as Wisconsin’s governor.
Roys’ campaign said she will focus on “expanding health care, defending our rights and freedoms, and fighting to make life more affordable for Wisconsin families.”
Republican candidate Bill Berrien took Roys’ Monday announcement as a chance to criticize her time in the State Senate and her record.
“Wisconsin families rejected Kelda Roy’s extreme, far-left policies and Medicare for All Agenda once and they’re not about to elect a career politician who views the governor’s mansion as another stepping stone in her career,” Berrien said in a statement.
Berrien is one of two Republicans who are officially in the race. He and Washington County Executive Josh Schoemann have been campaigning for months. Republicans are waiting to see if Northwoods’ Congressman Tim Tiffany also jumps in.
Democrats expect to see a fourth candidate soon. Soon-to-be-former WEDC chief Missy Hughes is rumored to be on her way into the race as well.
