Laura Benjamin Drops Out
There is one less Democrat running against Derrick Van Orden.
Candidate Laura Benjamin on Friday announced that she is dropping out of the race in the Third Congressional District.
“Running a congressional campaign across a district as large as WI-03 takes significant financial resources. Despite the incredible support we’ve received, the path to victory simply isn’t there without the level of fundraising required to reach voters. Rather than run a campaign without a viable path forward, I’ve made the difficult decision to suspend efforts at this time," she said in a statement.
Benjamin claims her decision is a "transition, not an ending."
“The fight for Medicare for All, living wages, and guaranteed human rights does not stop here. I’m committed to being part of that effort moving forward, whether through grassroots advocacy, coalition work, or whatever comes next," she added.
Van Orden, who is the current Republican congressman, simply acknowledged Benjamin's decision on X.
"Didn’t see that coming," Van Orden wrote.
Benjamin's exit leaves two other Democrats, Emily Berge and Rebecca Cooke, in the race against Van Orden.
Cooke ran against Van Orden in 2024, and lost by a little more than 2.5%. In raw votes, that was just about 12,000 votes.
