Crowley's Milwaukee Budget Plan
David Crowley is not telling anyone what the next Milwaukee County budget will look like.
Crowley, who is running as the Democrat candidate in the race for governor, on Tuesday said his next spending plan will remain a secret.
“We are going through the process of our budget proposal right now, and you will see it when we release it,” Crowley said.
Crowley is looking at a difficult task of balancing Milwaukee County’s budget. Milwaukee County is currently looking at a $50 million deficit, and a five-year forecast that says Milwaukee County could be $160 million in the hole by 2031.
Crowley has proposed sweeping cuts to Milwaukee’s bus service as a way to close the county’s budget gap.
On Tuesday he didn’t say he plans to raise taxes in the next budget, but he also didn’t rule it out.
Instead, Crowley tried to put Milwaukee County’s struggles on the back of his Republican opponent in November’s election.
“Congressman Tom Tiffany continues to want to lie about my record, but doesn’t want to talk about the fact that he cut $1 trillion from Medicaid and Medicare. That he cut SNAP benefits from our seniors, from veterans, and children right here in the state of Wisconsin,” Crowley told reporters. “We are focusing on making sure that when the tide rises, all boats rise.”
Those cuts that Crowley claimed came as part of Tiffany's vote for the Big Beautiful Bill. Republicans say no one is being cut from the program, but there are new work requirements.
Tiffany immediately questioned how Crowley will handle Milwaukee County’s budget without a tax increase.
“The Milwaukee County Budget Office requested a staggering 26% property tax increase for 2027," Tiffany wrote in a post on X. "So, yes, @DavidCCrowley will raise taxes on Milwaukee County residents AGAIN, just as he has done every single other year as County Executive."
