SCOWIS Chooses 6 Judges to Decide Congressional Map Lawsuits

Republicans in Wisconsin are saying that the redistricting fix is in.

Republicans and conservatives across the state on Tuesday reacted with horror to the Democrats named to the Wisconsin Supreme Court’s two redistricting panels.

The court says one three-judge panel will decide if Wisconsin’s current political map is “anti-competitive,” and protects incumbents in Congress. The other panel will decide if the map unconstitutionally gerrymanders the state along political lines.

Conservative Wisconsin Supreme Court Justice Annette Ziegler said the progressive majority on the court hand-picked Democratic judges “in furtherance of delivering partisan, political advantage to the Democratic Party.”

She slammed the court’s picks as purely political.

“Hand picking circuit court judges to perform political maneuvering is unimaginable,” Ziegler wrote in her opinion.

Ziegler, however, wasn’t alone.

"These folks care about one thing: power,” western Wisconsin Republican Congressman Derrick Van Orden said in a post on X.

Van Orden is all but certain to be the Democrats’ top target in redistricting.

The Wisconsin Republican party also took to X to slam the liberal-majority Wisconsin Supreme Court.

“Out of 261 circuit judges, the far-left Supreme Court has chosen 6 other far-left judges to oversee redistricting, INCLUDING A FORMER DEM COUNTY CHAIR AND 3 EVERS APPOINTEES,” the party posted.

WisPolitics reported that five of the six judges “endorsed liberal Susan Crawford” in her race for the supreme court last spring. The sixth judge is a Gov. Evers appointee.

The two panels of judges will be deciding on Wisconsin’s 2022 Congressional map. It has already survived court challenges, and has been used in the past two races for Congress in the state.

They will have to make their decisions quickly. The 2026 race has already begun, and official candidate paperwork is due by April of next year. Five of them endorsed liberal Susan Crawford ahead of this spring’s race as she won an open seat on the court. The lone judge who didn’t was appointed to the bench by Dem Gov. Tony Evers in 2019.
